Hi all.
I'm on 27.0.1. As I understand it, we can now record Voiceover/system sounds, where we couldn't before? How does this work? Can you use anything, e.g. Voice Memos, Garage Band, Logic, or do you need something specific? ANy settings changes you need to make? Basically, how do you actually do it? I have no idea.

Screenshot Utility
As a user, you'll need to use Screenshot Utility which you can bring up by pressing Command+Shift+5, select any of the recording options, and then in the Options menu select to include system audio. To stop recording, either select the stop icon in menu extras or press Control+Command+Escape. QuickTime Player can also record the screen, but it will just launch Screenshot Utility so you might as well launch it directly using the aforementioned key combination. As a developer, the feature has been available in ScreenCaptureKit since macOS 13 and in public CoreAudio as audio taps since macOS 14.2.
Re: Screenshot Utility
Wait what? I didn't know this. Now it makes sense, I heard somewhere that as of macos 13 or 14 apparently apple directly contributed somewhere in obs to add system audio recording capability after removing it on the public interface since 12 or something for copyright reasons... Now I understand it better.
Re: Screenshot Utility
System audio recording has always been possible, with kernel extensions pretending to be sound card drivers to which you would route audio output and they would return it as input, but then Apple deprecated kernel extensions for security so using them required disabling System Integrity Protection in macOS 12, I think, and added the ability to write plug-ins to CoreAudio, which is how Blackhole works. Then in macOS 13, the ScreenCaptureKit framework shipped with the ability to record system audio, but the Screenshot Utility wasn't updated to take advantage of that, and in macOS 14.2, audio taps that can tap into any output device and capture the audio of any group of specific applications were introduced in public CoreAudio, so these days it's no longer necessary to create virtual audio devices or reroute audio in order to capture system audio.
The functionality provided by Screenshot Utility and ScreenCaptureKit is actually quite limited compared to what's possible to accomplish programmatically with CoreAudio these days, as even the Audio MIDI Setup tool has been nerfed for whatever reason.
