Looking for VoiceOver feedback on recent accessibility updates to my indie game

Hi everyone,

I am an indie developer and recently updated my game Couch x Crawler after realizing I had overlooked screen reader accessibility when a reddit user asked me about it. I also found this site through reddit and was told to post here.

The game is a premium idle RPG where your character continues adventuring even when the app is closed. Think Tamagotchi X DnD.

Recent accessibility work includes:
• VoiceOver support
• Improved labels and navigation
• Voice Control-friendly controls
• Reduced Motion support

I know accessibility is much bigger than a single update, and I still have a lot to learn. I also still need to spend more time testing features like Switch Control support.

I wanted to post here because I would genuinely appreciate feedback from VoiceOver users about usability, navigation, and areas that still need improvement.

App Store link:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/couch-x-crawler/id6758249866

If anyone would like to test the app but the $4.99 price is a barrier, I’d be happy to provide a few promo codes for accessibility feedback.

Thank you for any feedback you are willing to share.

Hi there,
Purchased and downloaded. I'm only on the main screen but most things look promising. There is one thing I saw though. There is an image labeled as Couch X Crawler, but that doesn't tell me what the image is.
Do you have any other means of communication that might be easier for us to use?
Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. That's very helpful. That is the text behind the logo that sits at the top of the main screen. I can remove that. It seems like it might not be needed. Well remove or make the metadata more meaningful and have it say "game logo" or something similar. Also thanks for the support! as far as communication I'm on Instagram as TristansPlanet. I don't quite feel comfortable sharing my cell on here. But if you can find me there I'm on signal and whatsapp too

Hi,
I would strongly consider creating, at the very least, a dedicated email address for people to use, as there aren't a lot of blind people on Instagram.
I also have more feedback.
Firstly, props to you for using voiceover hints, that's not something a lot of developers know about/use, in my experience.
Secondly, character creation, the only minor issue I had was that when selecting my class, the different classes were selectable but were not properly labeled as buttons to indicate that they could be.
On the main screen, it seems like a lot of information is repeated twice. There is a button element immediately after which lists my character's name, plus all of their stats. The start expedition button is next, and then my character's stats are repeated again. This time however they are individual elements.
What I call the care buttons could use a little more clarity. The action is understandable. What is not immediately clear is how each button impacts each stat. It can be reasoned out with the feed button easily enough, but when you reach the play button there are two stats listed. I think it would be better if in this case, you changed things so that the buttons would read like this.
Feed, plus comfort
Play, plus mood, minus stamina.
Rest, plus stamina.
I will note that you do have voiceover hints which help here as well, that tell you if you don't have enough stamina or that the button has this impact on this stat, but it's also worth keeping in mind that this is not a setting that everyone uses, so communicating this information more clearly from the start is something to consider.
I have more feedback I will share later but hopefully this is enough to get you started for your next update!

First of all...wow. Thank you so much for all of this. This feedback is so valuable to me. These are all things I'd never be able to discover by myself.

Also - woof - am I dumb. Absolutely feel free to email me at TristanNohrer@gmail.com For whatever reason I didn't even think about email as a method of communication

Also please don't stop. I'm loving this feedback!

Hey, I would love to help, but funds are a barrier to me. So excited!

By Faerie on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 - 22:05

Thank you for looking into making your game more accessible! I'm curious, though, did you at one point post this to a cozy games reddit? If so, I think I might have seen you there, meant to ask about accessibility and completely forgotten, so I'm glad someone else picked up the ball!

By tristino on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 - 22:06

Well looks like my reddit profile was just revealed hahaha. Yep, that was me.

By Gar on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 - 23:32

Hi there,
I'm hoping this will still be helpful, as vague as it is, because I don't even know what's going on in order to provide clear feedback on it. Whenever I complete a run, the loot screen seems to list traits like chronically online which I already have, even though I didn't use them for that run. The screen could definitely be streamlined, as it seems to treat an item I gather, and the number of that item, as separate elements, when that really isn't necessary and just slows down the ability of a user to navigate the screen.

I'd recommend others use that email and get codes, if the dev is still willing to send them out. The game has no sounds and that's my mane reason for getting a refund, I paid £4.99 and honestly did expect sounds and music for that price.

By Gar on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 - 10:39

That's sad to hear, but if you feel you need to...
Developing a game, any game, takes a lot of time and energy. Integrating sounds, if the dev chose to do so, would probably double or tripple the price. Besides, the alternative was that the game be released for free and if it was, we'd probably be stuck with that god awful Unity ad system.
Speaking for myself I have no problem supporting a developer, especially a small one like this, just trying to get by. And to be fair, a game like this in my experience doesn't typically have sounds. He never advertised that it did, either.

By tristino on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 - 13:35

@brad I'm sorry that the game didn't live up to your expectations. I'd be more than happy to provide you with a code if you email me at TristanNohrer@gmail.com

@gar thanks again for more thoughtful feedback. You can also me at TristanNohrer@gmail.com if you'd like. I have already started working on your first set of feedback and will add this latest feedback to my list.

@everyone

Just so it's public information here there are currently no SFX in the game. However, I do plan to add some. On top of that I'm also working on designing all of the loot and making it wearable. The chokepoint is that I'm just a one-man team and this isn't my full time job - it's just a labor of love born of corporate burnout. So I'm working on it when I have time. But more importantly I want the game to be playable by everyone from all walks.

By Brad on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 - 14:49

For something like that I'd at least expect a background track and sounds, but if you like supporting this dev that's great, relaly it is, the game just isn't for me.

By Faerie on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 - 17:03

Plenty of apps are around with no sounds, and while I do like having them, I do not believe this is necessarily a fair assessment or insistence at that price point. To be fair, I haven't played because combat doesn't really hold my interest, so perhaps the experience is minimalistic in some other way, but from what I've gathered the game is rather robust, with a great deal of care behind it and potential to grow. It's only natural that's going to cost a bit of coin.

By Brad on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 - 17:59

Some people don't mind no sounds and that's fine, all the power to them, I just prefer sounds.

The voiceover work was honestly really good from what I tried, the app layout is fine, the only thing is some things aren't buttons, like the character class selection, I tapped on what made sense, like mage or fighter or ranger but yeah, to a new voiceover user this would be quite confusing as they'd not understand that this peace of text is actually a button.

By tristino on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 - 20:03

I appreciate all of your feedback. You actually inspired to me start creating some music for the game. I made some SFX and tracks today.

Thanks for the feedback regarding the characters' class too.

I'm hoping maybe be end of next week I can submit all of the new accessibility updates based on feedback. I also need to convert and trim all of my tracks and make sure the logic works across scenes and transitions. I might make that a separate update. I'll just have to find out what all I have time for.

By Brad on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 - 20:57

The game isn't my kind of thing, but I really do apreciate the work you've put into this, well done!

By Missy Hoppe on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 - 21:09

I bought t his game last night, and am really enjoying it so far. I couldn't care less about sound effects, especially given the nature of this game. I haven't run into any accessibility issues. My only request, and it's not even all that important, is additional character customization options, but the fact that those options don't exist yet doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the game. Thank you very much for making us aware of this game. I think I'm really going to enjoy it, and at least in my mind, the price was very fair.

By UnboundDara on Thursday, May 21, 2026 - 02:47

So far, I've been playing on and off through the day, and as the game requires, checking in after expeditions. I've levelled my character to 6 so fa, and am thoroughly interested, and also amused by the way things are done, shown, and the little bits of humor added into the game. (Goblin influencers, as an example.)
There's a lot I really enjoy about this game, with the stats (that I don't quite understand yet), to the potential for mini-games (that help out with different things?) and the way the expeditions are set up. You get access to longer and longer missions the more you play, and I really appreciate this. This is an approach I wish other games would take to this, since it means the further in you are, the longer you can set it aside, and let it do its thing.
A neat thing, in my opinion, in addition to this, is a way to optionally reduce the time needed. Such as increasing a stat to make missions "easier," gear that reduces the duration, that you can put on, if you wanted faster missions, and the likes. But, remaining an optional thing, for the people that still would rather set it and come back in 4 hours when the mission is done. (As an example.)
I do have a question: There seems to be the option for multiple characters, and I was wondering to what extent this is available? Are you able to send multiple characters on missions? Can they interact with each other, loosely? (Meaning you obtain multiple things, based on what you have running? Or, would they be separate?
Lastly:
So far, you've done a great job with the accessibility! You've got everything, it seems, labelled, though I wonder what these images are.
I am guessing the use of some emojis (wrapped candy for the level up items, or test tubes for the revival items) is meant to convey the imagery? Also, question: I cannot seem to use the only hurry item I have? I click on it to select it, and thought the longer missions would make it available, but it just will not select to be used. How am I supposed to select it in the special items area of the "Start Expedition" area?
Great game so far, and looking forward to updates, and not just to the accessibility! And, thank you for the code, I think I'll be enjoying this one for a long time!
Last question:
Is this only on iOS, or do you have any plans to make it available on Android?

By tristino on Thursday, May 21, 2026 - 15:08

1. Thank you for taking the time to leave such thoughtful feedback.
2. Yes the emojis are meant to convey imagery for items within the game
3. The hurryupium callout is actually great. You can only use that item on the expedition load-out screen. It's at the very bottom. You have to select it before you start an expedition. I could see though how having it in the menu you are talking about is confusing. So again, thank you.
4. This is actually totally available on Android now: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tristannohrer.couchxcrawler

Would be happy to give out an android code too if funds are a blocker

By tristino on Thursday, May 21, 2026 - 15:23

Missy,

Thank you for your comments. This is a definitely a labor of love for me. In the game now you can earn small amounts of loot. One of my goals is to make the loot wearable by your character. I just need to find the time to sit now and draw everything and implement the code. This is definitely on my radar though!

By UnboundDara on Friday, May 22, 2026 - 02:59

Re: hurryupium.
The inventory did let us know this, but my comment was more in regards to that the item will not select when shown the special items available.
Another bit of feedback: Are there plans to make more special items like this? Such as an item that could increase the duration, but provide with extra loot percentage? (For balancing sake.)

By Adaria on Saturday, May 23, 2026 - 12:00

When going to brew a potion, for example the Luck one, at the bottom are the ingredients, however, these only have a label showing the number, there is no way to identify what item is which on this screen using voiceover. Its hould ideally have the name of the item and the quantity next to it in the label.
Enjoying this so far, it is silly and a nice little idle game and I look forward to seeing what all this does. I'm currently rocking an Elf and hope to see hat comes of this in time. I'm fine with no music, not everything needs to be flufed up and puffed up. This is simple and easy and not a complicated game to figure out. I like that, some games get entirely too cemplicated with way too many things to do or keep up with even for an idle game here it takes way too much time to actually do stuff in it to maintain the idle. Which is silly. This is nice and easy.

Sorry everyone. I stepped away from my computer for a bit to take a personal break. It was a super busy week at my regular job. Thank you so much for all of the feedback. I've already started implementing something things and I'm hoping to have an updated version submitted for release to Google/Apple by end of next week. Stay tuned! I know I already said but you all are helping so much. I'm a one person team doing all of this. It's definitely a labor of love and an intersection of my passions. So your help means a lot. Again if price is a barrier for anyone please email me at TristanNohrer@gmail.com

Subject kinda says it in a nutshell, but really, many thanks for developing this. I like the style of the game, and have always been a fan of idle games. (And as such, needed in as quick as possible for this, haha!) I've always enjoyed Planet Life, Idle Iktah, and Home Quest, which feel SIMILAR to this game, in other ways, and this has me so excited to see what comes next.
Also, do you have a Discord?

By Leela on Monday, May 25, 2026 - 22:16

As soon as I get paid again, I will be going and getting this game. Thanks so much for supporting our community. It's sometimes isolating and disappointing to be a blind gamer. I could say more but I won't do that here. We desperately need more cozy games playable by totally blind players. I'm looking forward to trying this one.

Hi @tristino

Regarding in-game sounds, I have a few resources that might save you some time.

I'd like to introduce you to the OpenGameArt.org community. They often have game music or 2D art that they share for free. Often, the free resources shared by the community can significantly reduce your workload.
