Hello, All,
My 2025 MacBook Air running MacOS. Tahoe 26.3.1 seems to not want to take my password and update.
It lets me enter it on the login screen, but, whenever I try updating it, and entering the password, it won't take it.
I've double-checked that I'm inputting it correctly, and, I also realized that the capslock key was getting activated, without me pressing it. It still wouldn't take even after I pressed the capslock key to turn capslock off. I tried calling Apple, and, thex said they'd never seen this before. Whenever I power off my Mac, I close it right away, so no dust gets on the keyboard.
While I can sympathize with it not wanting to grow older/update, I'd still like to update it. :-) ;-) I'm a new user, and, doing my best, but, I need to get rid of or at least defeat the tech gremlins. So, any help you can give me would be very much appreciated. TIA! :-)

Useless answer but
I remember this happened to me at the beginning.
I'll try to reproduce and let you know how I was able to fix it. On Ventura in 2023.
Which password?
Not asking you to give me your password, of course, but rather asking you which password its asking you to input? Is it asking for the password you used to get to your desktop from the macOS login screen? Is it asking for your AppleID password?
If it is asking for the former, have you tried changing your password, even if only temporarily?
RE: Which Password?
It's asking for the password I use to get to the desktop from the login screen. As for changing it, I tried to, and, even then, the capslock key is activated. So, I can't change it.
I even looked to double-check with the tech and, see if there were any other users, and, it's just little old me.

Can you use an external keyboard to do so. Do you have an extra keyboard to use? LLC.
give this a shot
When it asks for your password, get out of the password field before inputting your password, then turn disable caps lock then go back to the password field and put in your password. This has happened to me a few times. Let me know if that works.
Re: External keyboard
I would agree with Holger, if possible for you, try plugging in an external hardware keyboard and see if you can't get your password to work so that you can update your Mac. While I am not certain why your caps lock key continues to activate itself, I do have a question for you with regards to that particular key. Do you use it as a VoiceOver modifier?
here's what I do
This sometimes happens to be on the login screen after I wake up my Mac. I have a m1, but this is how I deal with it
After I hear login screen chatter, I tabn the login button, than I turn caps lock on and off, then I am able to put in my password correctly.
Update
Hello everyone! I have a couple of updates. One good and one bad. The good news is, I was able to turn on my Mac, and it decided to cooperate! I donβt know why, but Iβm glad it did! Itβs almost like it didnβt like being put in time out. Lol :-)
Bad news is, I was trying to update some apps from the App Store. And I went to put in my password, and the caps lock key is getting activated again. I tried moving out of the password field and turning caps lock off and then going back in, but it automatically seems to be activating the caps lock key now. How can I stop this from happening? This has never happened before. Itβs asking me for the password for my Apple account to update the apps.
As for the external keyboard, sadly, I do not have that option. The only thing that I have is Braille Display that is connected using Bluetooth. But I do not have an external keyboard.
A question
Could your Braille display be the culprit behind why the caps lock key continues to automatically activate? Would it be possible to disconnect the braille display, into your password, and then reconnect your braille display?
