Here we go Apple and age verification

Ok guys well as of yesterday Apple have added a setting to verify you are over 18. It is being rolled out apparently. It states if you do not verify you will be blocked from doing certain things on the phone. I know this is not an Apple thing just implementing stuff from certain countries like the UK. However, they suggest using a credit card as you can only get one when over 18. You can use the camera for a quick fix but I had to try manually and could not work out how to add a phone number which sounds daft. I think it is you don't need to put the country code in so in the uk instead of 07 just use 7 my sighted partner managed to do this. However, it then wants you to make it your default payment option which I did not want to do and I haven't found a way of not making it as such. So, if you have not yet seen this setting I fear it is coming. I don't think it is just for the UK either based on a quick google search. Oh and not sure which forum to put this so if the mods want to change it feel free.

I was presented with this yesterday after an update here in the UK.

I was able to complete the steps using VoiceOver including entering my phone number. The first field contained the area code where I live and I entered my phone number in the second field. For some reason it inserted a space in the number which prevented me from completing the process but having filled in all the required information and removing the unwanted space character I was able to complete it. Not sure how or if you could complete this if you didn’t hold a credit card?

The first field for the phone number needs to be labelled better as it also had me confused. Note that the continue button is announced as being dimmed even when all required fields are populated correctly. However, it does activate when pressed. For quite some time I’ve noticed other buttons in different apps which also say they are dimmed even when they can be activated. So if you think a button should work, but it says it is dimmed, give it a try anyway.

So, say I have a mobile number not a landline what do you put in each field? So for example in the UK I have 07123456789 Do I put 71234 in the first field then 56789 in the 2nd? I've tried a few variations and it doesn't seem to like it. I think it automatically puts in the +44 hence dropping the 0.

When I completed the age verification, swiping through the screen, I came to a field that already contained the area code where I live. My current area code here in the UK is 01495. This code was already inserted in the first field and was not prefixed with +44. So the 01495 was already there, so in the second field I entered the remaining digits, 722123. When I reviewed the field it actually entered, 7221 23. Once I completed all fields and removed the unwanted space character double tapping the Done Button took me to the next screen. At first I didn’t notice the unwanted space and although the Done Button was not described as being dimmed, it did nothing.

Hope this clarifies the situation.

Great thanks for the clarification. So managed to get to the next stage of using this payment method. Whilst I didn't want to change decided to go for it. So, got a verification from the bank advising me to go back to apple.com where the request came from and crash bang wallop! All there is on the screen is a cancel button even with SR turned on. When I hit cancel as I had no choice some weird what I think must be an error comes up with a close option and then you are back to the screen where you put in the card info. So basically, I couldn't register the card. What a shambles this may become for people.

When I used my HSBC credit card I had no issues completing the form. I was not prompted by my card issuer, this may vary from bank to bank. Worth noting you cannot use a debit card. Looking at my Apple Pay my default card has not been changed, it’s still my debit card.

The reason, I'm guessing, that we cannot use debit cards is because you can get one of those when you're under 18. I remember being issued with a debit card by Barclays when I was very young, perhaps 15 but maybe 16. as for age verification, you've got Peter Kyle to thank for that even though he's been shuffled sideways out of the culture, media and sport brief in the cabinet by No Fear Keir. I did warn Applevisers about him on a thread a few months back. as Nigel would say: Well i have to say, you're not laughing now, are you?
