VoiceOver Live Recognition “Scene” Broken for Nearly 1.5 Years – Possible Trigger Identified

iOS and iPadOS

I’m sharing a long-standing VoiceOver issue here in hopes that more users (and possibly Apple engineers) can see it, reproduce it, and help push it toward resolution.

This problem has existed for nearly one and a half years, and despite multiple reports, it appears the underlying cause may have been difficult to identify. After extensive testing, I believe I have found a critical and reproducible trigger condition.

System Context / Timeframe Clarification
This issue appears to be specific to the “Live Recognition → Scene” feature (accessed via the VoiceOver rotor) as introduced in iOS 18.
Scene recognition in Live Recognition is a relatively new capability, and the behavior described below has been observed since iOS 18 became available.

Issue Summary
In VoiceOver → Live Recognition, the “Scene” recognition mode (invoked via the VoiceOver rotor) stops working under specific conditions.

Key Discovery (Highly Reproducible)
Through repeated testing, I observed the following behavior:
• When Image Descriptions is disabled and its data package is not present,
→ Live Recognition – Scene works normally.
• Once Image Descriptions is enabled and the ~43.7 MB data package is downloaded,
→ Live Recognition – Scene no longer works.

Scene recognition only returns to normal after the Image Descriptions data file is removed. Simply toggling the setting off does not restore Scene recognition if the data package remains on the device.

Why This May Have Been Hard to Find
• The issue appears to be tied to the presence of a specific data package, not just a visible setting.
• Standard actions such as toggling features or resetting settings do not clearly remove this data file.
• Without an explicit hypothesis linking Scene recognition to Image Descriptions data, this conflict is easy to overlook.

Why I’m Posting This
I’m not posting this as a complaint, but as a technical clue.
If others can confirm similar behavior, this may help Apple identify the root cause more efficiently.

If you rely on VoiceOver Live Recognition, especially Scene recognition, I encourage you to test this scenario and share your findings.

This issue has already been reported to Apple (Case ID: 16845855), and broader visibility may help move it toward resolution.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read, test, or share this.

Hi, I just checked and it really stops working if you download the image description file, it's very strange and I hope the developers will finally pay attention to this error and fix it

I'm not even sure what Live Recognition – Scene is. In my camera view finder, I turn on image descriptions in my camera app, put focus on the view finder, and it describes, very vaguely, what the camera is receiving, and updates when things change. I don't have the Live Recognition – Scene as an option on my rotor. I remember image description or something like that not working in most apps after an update back around that time, and I had to do the download to get it back.
So what is the difference?

I know that Live Recognition is in the settings because I've seen it, but the one time I tried it out I myself was rather confused. But thank you for posting. I've tried out the other parts of VoiceOver Recognition, and they're cool but a bit confusing. I have another question about VoiceOver Recognition, but I'll post that separately.

I am sure it must be a valid issue, but, may be I am not getting what he is talking about.
Seen recognition works on my 15 pro max, without any issues. And I do use image descriptions feature quite actively as well, although not sure if I ever downloaded an image description file.

I'm running a se 2022, and it does scene recognition and I use image description all the time. If I were in your position, and I really wanted the feature to work, I'd back up the phone and reset the settings, as painful as that may be.

I had to add Live Recognition to my rotor, an interesting feature I didn't know about, and thank you for bringing it up. It does work with the image description data etc. However, I installed it a long time back, and I have no idea if uninstalling it then reinstalling it now would mess things up. I'm not going to do that.
And good grief, it talks right over VO while I'm trying to shut it off. I guess you have to put your hand over the camera to shut it up so you can hear what the rotor option is to shut it off.

Apple engineers aren’t really coming on this website. The users of voiceover can be a little reactionary. And, the level of competence, in terms of using these devices, is all over the place. So, they tend to stay off. Accessibility@apple.com is the best way to report an issue you’re seeing.
