macOS Golden Gate: New Features, Changes, Improvements, and Bugs for Blind and Low Vision Users

Apple has today released macOS 27 Golden Gate to the public. As usual, we won’t cover the mainstream features here, concentrating instead on what's new and changed for blind, DeafBlind, and low vision users. For an overview of the mainstream changes, we recommend this in-depth review by MacStories.

Please remember to check the section about bugs to see if now is the right time to upgrade. There’s no harm in holding off a few weeks or months to let Apple address a problem you may find too disruptive to deal with.

A note to braille users: the AppleVis team members doing testing with macOS Golden Gate are not heavy braille users. We have no information as to how well braille works in this release, so please keep this in mind when upgrading. If you are a braille user who has experience with Golden Gate, please share your findings in the comments to help the community.

Changes for VoiceOver and Braille Users

Improved Image and Screen Descriptions

As on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, VoiceOver in macOS Golden Gate can use Apple Intelligence to describe and answer questions about images or the current screen as it appears visually. Focusing on an image and pressing VO-Shift-L will describe the image, and you can find additional options, such as the ability to ask about an image, explore the image spatially, or describe the current screen, by pressing VO-Shift-R from anywhere in macOS. For added convenience, commands in this menu can be mapped in VoiceOver Utility > Commands. Note that while VoiceOver can describe and answer questions about what's on the screen, it cannot directly interact with elements like VOCR or Screen Recognition on iOS and iPadOS can.

New Verbosity Options for Coding

With macOS Golden Gate, you can customize how information such as line numbers, errors, and warnings are reported by VoiceOver in code editors like Xcode. These settings can be found in the new "Coding" tab in VoiceOver Utility > Verbosity. We do not currently know which code editors besides Xcode respect these settings.

New "Actions" rotor for trackpad users

With macOS Golden Gate, you can perform custom actions for the focused element, the same actions available in VoiceOver's Actions menu, using trackpad commands. To do this, enable trackpad commands if they're not already enabled, turn the rotor to "Actions," swipe up or down with one finger to select a custom action, and double-tap to activate it.

"Ducking Amount" setting

The "Ducking Amount" setting for determining how much other audio is ducked when VoiceOver is speaking, originally introduced with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, has been brought to macOS with the release of Golden Gate. It can be found in VoiceOver Utility > Sound.

Braille Improvements

While it is not something we have been able to test, we are aware of the following improvements for braille users in macOS Golden Gate:

  • As on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, text field labels can now be shown in braille. You can change the format these labels are presented in, or hide them entirely, by going to VoiceOver Utility > Braille > Layout, and clicking Text Field Labels.
  • As on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, Braille Access in macOS Golden Gate supports plain text (txt) and portable document format (PDF) files.

Improvements for Low Vision Users

While it is not something we have been able to test, we are aware of the following improvement for low vision users:

  • As on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, content in Accessibility Reader can now be summarized and translated while retaining its original formatting on macOS Golden Gate.

Other Changes

  • As on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, the Aaron (English US), Arthur (English UK), Catherine (English Australia), Gordon (English Australia), and Martha (English UK) voices have been reintroduced with macOS Golden Gate. Like other voices, they can be used with Siri, as well as for accessibility functions like VoiceOver and Read & Speak.
  • As on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, subtitles for spoken dialog in videos where captioning is not already provided can be generated automatically in macOS Golden Gate. These can be turned on and adjusted when playing a video by clicking the "show legible media selection menu" button in the playback controls group.
  • Writing Tools, previously accessed from many apps' Edit menus, as well as many text fields' context menus, is now accessed with VoiceOver by focusing on a text field and choosing "Show Writing Tools" from the Actions Menu.
  • When toggling Cursor Tracking with VO-F3, its state is reflected in the "Mouse pointer:" popup menu in VoiceOver Utility. In prior versions of macOS, the state of Cursor Tracking was not reflected in this popup menu, which had the potential to confuse users.

Change List

In its support documentation, Apple lists the following changes for VoiceOver users in macOS Golden Gate:

  • You can now turn off announcements that webpages send automatically, such as live scores, new messages, or status updates. Turn off Enable Web Announcements to silence announcements from a single area of a webpage or from the entire page. VoiceOver remembers your choice for that website, so the area stays silent the next time you visit.
  • With the new Coding tab in the Verbosity category of VoiceOver Utility, you can choose whether VoiceOver announces line numbers, and whether it plays a tone or speaks a description when it encounters an error, a breakpoint, or the program counter.

Bug Fixes and New Bugs for VoiceOver Users

Below are lists of the bugs we believe to have been resolved in macOS Golden Gate, as well as new bugs introduced in this release. We strongly recommend that you read through the list of new bugs and any replies before updating, as this will allow you to make an informed decision on whether to install macOS Golden Gate or wait for a future release.

While we are confident in the status of issues contained in this post, we do not claim that our bug list is definitive or that our assessments are infallible. Some issues may manifest only under specific conditions; this is all the more likely as software continues to add more features, and the number of available configurations and use cases in Apple's ecosystem continues to grow. You likely will not experience every bug that we list, and it is also likely that you will encounter issues that we did not experience during our own testing and daily use of macOS Golden Gate.

To ensure the information here is as complete and accurate as possible, we would appreciate input from those who have installed macOS Golden Gate. Please confirm if you are encountering the same problems listed or if you have found workarounds. Please also let us know about any additional issues not mentioned here. Introducing Siri AI, an entirely new version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence that’s more personal, more capable, and more conversational. It is integrated into Spotlight, so you can search for answers about almost any topic right from where you already search for things across your system. It can draw on personal context to find things across your messages, mail, photos, and more. And it can get things done across your apps, just by asking. New tools to browse in Safari

Automatically group your tabs into topics, so related pages are easier to find. With Notify Me, Safari can monitor pages for changes like price drops or restocks and alert you when it’s time to act. Describe an Extension lets you use natural language to create custom extensions, like adding a button to save your favorite recipes.

Easily create Shortcuts using natural language

With Describe a Shortcut, you can automate daily tasks with a simple description and all of the required steps are assembled on your behalf. For example, you can describe a shortcut to automatically text your partner when you’re headed home from work with an estimated arrival time based on traffic.

Even more refined design

Updates to Liquid Glass improve readability, and a new slider lets you customize how it looks, from ultra-clear to fully tinted. Uniform toolbars, edge-to-edge sidebars, and more detailed app icons further elevate the design.

New child safety features

Powerful new parental controls help parents manage what content their children see, who they can communicate with, and when they can access apps. Ask to Browse requires kids to request permission before visiting any new website in Safari. Communication Safety expands its protections to help keep conversations safe. One thing I can say right off the bat, is that MacOs 27 Golden Gate is waaayyy more responsive, in terms of voiceover. There is a small issue regarding bluetooth devices and battery level. I can't seem to see the battery level from within the bluetooth menu extras menu. Unless you have to go into system settings then to bluetooth, I can't think of any way to see your connected devices battery level.

I use VoiceOver on macOS with the US English Siri voices, specifically Voice 1 and Voice 4, and the speech sounds distorted. The beginning of words seems to get cut off, especially the first word when VoiceOver starts speaking.

It sounds as though the speakers are asleep and only wake up after the first sound has already played. There’s also distortion similar to what you might hear with the volume turned all the way up, resulting in clipped, unclear speech.

Has anyone who has updated to Golden Gate experienced this issue? I’d appreciate hearing from others before attempting a clean reinstall of macOS, as I don’t want to go through that process only to discover that the problem persists.

I was trying to use Siri voice 4 US, but it won't download. I used the actions menu and pressed download voice 4 several timesa dn it won't work.

I still have not found a way to turn off Apple Intelligence on the Mac without turning off Siri and even then I don't think that turns off majority of the features. I know last year you had the option to turn off Apple Intelligence, but I guess not anymore? If anyone can confirm this.

I consider any voiceover users the update the first day on any of our devices pretty brave. I’ve only done it once and he probably won’t be likely to do it again. The only reason I did it one time is because I knew that the bugs that were in the blood poster things that I never use the features of so I knew it wouldn’t affect me. And that was back in iOS 16. I don’t have a Mac but I think everybody is super brave to update the first day. Good luck to everybody and I really do. Hope you guys have a good experience as we get further on into the 27th cycle and even before that.

Include system audio for screen recording, toggle aria announcements off, and a new unmapped command to read line numbers. I love them! The update was worth it just for those.
It's even more stable than last year v1 imo.
There are two new voiceover navigation things to move to item before / after the current group, and, tldr itdoesn't work at all, anywhere. Voiceover has one of these undocumented half boot where it would tell the welcome message again. But from the description it seem similar to nvda comma "," web shortcut to go after the end of the current group, a list for example. I just hope it will work.
And the developer options only I seem to talk here are still hidden under braille settings!!!!
But overall, decent update.
We still don't know what is toggle insertion point navigation, nor the go to next / previous same table level item from macos 26, or rewind / fast forward, voiceover text selection is still broken, and I am sure that the coding verbositi settings will only be for xcode and apple will probably never provide any documentation for how to integrate it elsewhere for other IDEs. But this is not anything new so :)

I have gone through every single beta. And honestly?

Very solid. The first few betas were kind of meh, but now it's actually a very good experience. Besides the fact that I can't turn off Apple Intelligence or disable certain Apple Intelligence features, which sucks because it's taking up like 20-something gigabytes of my storage, this is a pretty decent update.

Also, I don't get Safari not responding unless other tasks are doing some really heavy lifting, or it's a really bad website hardware-wise.

This is on an M1 MacBook Air with 16 GB of RAM.

I agree taht it's a relatively reliable macOS release. Some of the panning issues with the braille display (especially in paragraphs containing links, where it won't reliably pan to the next segment of text) are still there. Besides that, it's generally working as expected. Also, the "go to visible beginning" command (VO-Shift-Home) now takes you to the top of the terminal window. It used to work in some cases, then broke completely, and now seems to be back.

Actually, I reported this in the tahoe version, go to visible beginning would work as expected only at or before the second last page in scroll area, not the very last. Glad to hear that apparently it works now. Another plus for apple!

When I press the option plus the space bar, it doesn't activate Siri like it used to. It also says system like I have a system notification but there's nothing there. Very annoying.

SIRI has been broken for me through the entire Golden Gate beta cycle.

Alicia Krage, do me a favor. Go into System Settings, SIRI, and tell me if you have a "Prompts" button, some way to specify a keyboard shortcut, or a way to specify listening for SIRI or Hey SIRI.

I don't have any of those UI elements in my SIRI system settings. I thought this was a beta bug that they would have fixed by now, but if your System Settings looks like mine, then Apple needs to hear about this.

There's a "Requests" button that takes you to options for activating Siri. Also, holding the F5 key for several seconds (FN-F5 if the keys are configured to act as function keys) activates Siri for speech input.

Single item mode is still not working correctly in Safari and WebKit views in general. If you have the option “Show multiple items” disabled in VoiceOver Utlity > Braille > Layout, the layout in Web views is completely messed up. Sometimes, semantic information is completely missing, layout suddenly switches to multi-item mode and displays something completely different than where the focus is actually located, dots 7-8 are displayed randomly on elements even thtough the setting is disabled (and disabled by default when single item mode is used).
After Big Sur which was my first macOS, this is the next worst release I’ve seen so far. Fortunately, I tested it on an old machine that I degraded to a bety-only Mac and have disabled auto updates on my daily used Mac.
All the ‘27 releases are all about bugs instead of quality as advertised at WWDC.

Try VSCode with editor open auto wrap on and then off and let me know that I am not the only person to think that this is not normal. Oh and with multi element thing off too. I kinda get it, at least we have the line separator to tell but it's still annoying.
This started in tahoe I believe.

I'm loving how quickly VoiceOver is announcing the keys that I press, and that's with AirPods Pro 3 on, which have the traditional Bluetooth latency. Without AirPods, the feedback happens even before I release the keys. Pretty impressive! I'm also surprised that the Screenshot app finally captures system audio, a long overdue feature!

My only annoyance so far is that VoiceOver announces a system window that is nowhere to be found whenever I press the volume buttons at least 4 times.

So, even in the release version of Golden Gate, there's still a waitlist? Interesting. I would have thought that was only a beta thing.

I downloaded the Golden Gate release installer. I'm going to install it on another APFS volume and compare SIRI state between release Golden Gate and broken beta Golden Gate. If I can figure out what's different, maybe I can repair SIRI on the beta 3 clean install. I don't want to migrate using Setup Assistant, as that would likely import my broken beta.

This has been a genuine PITA, and I'm surprise Apple didn't include a way to repair a broken beta SIRI, as I'm not the only one who ran into this.

I’m so sorry about this, your guys experiences are so all over the place. It’s either a really bad update and you’re having things broken not working or you’re really super impressed with it. That sucks. I mean like it’s kind of like that iOS as well, but definitely not the same way it seems to be on max every year. Just honestly comes down to the fact that Apple always has an annual software release. So regardless of the quality of the software still has to go out by a certain deadline. I think if they didn’t do that and you know waited till quality was actually ready. You wouldn’t run into half of these issues. Honestly even iOS this year has a lot of issues. I’m just not ready to deal with right now. I’m definitely just going to update to the 26.7 release for now.

OK, I’m guessing that’s a good thing? I don’t have a Mac so I have nothing to compare it to. I just read these blood posts because I’m just interested in people’s experience as I guess. I only have my primary iPhone on a secondary iPhone. But yeah, everybody’s experiences are just all over the place even with iOS and watchOS and stuff this year too. Like I said it’s literally because of the annual software update deadlines. I really don’t think it’s all 100% to do with anything with Accessibility necessarily. But you know hopefully a point one release will fix a lot of issues for a lot of people. Across all of the Apple platforms operating systems I guess.

I don’t remember Apple ever not having an annual software release. Just curious, has this always been the practice? My first iPhone was an iPhone 8 so I didn’t come into this world and this phones until iOS 13.3 something. So I was just genuinely curious if that’s always been the practice.

Back in the Jobs era, the only thing that had a predictable schedule was the WWDC. Everything else was launched when it was ready, and major versions of macOS were paid upgrades. It was also all about the Mac, which wasn't necessarily upgraded every year, until the iPhone came out and stole the show. It wasn't until iPhone 5, when Cook was already on the helm, that Apple started having a main event in September every year.

Prior to the release of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion in 2012, macOS (then known as OS X) usually had a major release every two years, from 10.3 Panther in 2003 to 10.7 Lion in 2011. iOS, on the other hand, has always been updated every year at the same time as that year's new iPhone, with versions 1 through 4 being released in June/July, version 5 being released in October, and every version since iOS 6 having been released in September.

The spelling out of the first 30 characters of words longer than that length in all US English voices except Alex, a bug introduced with a Catalina patch in 2019, is finally fixed. This was a major issue for developers like me who rely on VoiceOver to read code, as things like UIDocumentBrowserViewController (31 characters) had their first 30 characters spelled out.

i primarily use siri voice 1 and 4 with voice over. in this 27 update, those voices are not pronouncing the first word properly. the voices are breaking.
the aron and nicky voices are not speaking the samples. it is saying like, speak sample dimmed.

the feature is not working from tahoe 26, still not fixed in 27 also. particularly south indian languages like telugu, tamil, kannada, etc are not switching automatically.
on iphones the feature is working good. but for mac, since 2 years i think, it is not fixed.

i tried few methods like, changing language from english US to india, reenabled detect languages, finally reseted voice over preferences, etc. but no use.

Yes, I've noticed this with the Siri voices. I've also noticed a bug with spelling by character, when using the Siri voices. You get the first two letters, then a string of nonrelated characters, then one additional letter between such strings. This isn't present with other voices and while I could just change voices, none of the other mac voices seem to do it for me. The first syllabol cut off thing has gotten better in the last beta release after going public though, but still not completely cleaned up.

I was excited to try the new image description features in Golden gate but I must be missing something. When using vo-shift-l I get a minimal description, "red text on a white background", "two people standing with a black background", etc. When I use vo-shift-r to get to the options for description, and choose "ask about image" I ask if there is any text in the image, or could it read the text in the image. I'm told that it cannot "because some of the material may be of a sensitive nature". What? I went to system preferences and my sensitive content filter/action is off. Not sure what else to try. anyone else finding this?

The only operating system I know of which has a "release when ready" policy is Debian. Apple may build some flexibility into the release schedule, but it's a matter of months at most (e.g., September vs. October or November). If you really want a highly unchanging system which is updated only for security and bug fixes, then you need one of the "enterprise" Linux distributions that remains supported for a decade or more. I don't think annual releases with substantial new features are good for over-all software quality, and accessibility is not the only aspect that suffers from this practice.

There is a lot of discussion in the ios 27 release thread about this topic. It sounds like Apple has gone a bit overboard with censorship.

The RC seems to have disabled my custom services keyboard shortcuts. I had to go to Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, Services, then go through the table to General and expand it, and finally interact with each of my custom shortcuts to toggle their on/off switches.

after opening the mac, it is announcing like, accessibility UI server has no windows. also after opening system settings.
it is also present on tahoe 26 and not fixed in 27.
i am pressing command q, but it is coming multiple times.

Are you running Migration Assistant when you get this behavior?

I set up MacOS as a new Mac, signed in, tinkered around, then launched Migration Assistant. After clicking continue on the first dialog, VoiceOver immediately stopped functioning, and all I heard was "Accessibility UI Server has no windows." I had to hard-power cycle my system.

It seems like this would be easy for others to reproduce, so post here if you're seeing it.

SIRI was broke for me during the entire beta cycle. Today, I fixed it. I installed MacOS 27 again, and migrated from my existing open install.

The only thing I changed was where the OS was installed.

With MacOS 27 installed on an external SSD, SIRI AI does not work. It never gave me the UI to join a waitlist. And it never displayed any error message, leaving me baffled and frustrated.

Installed on my internal SSD, SIRI AI properly lets me join the waitlist, and will presumably work fine as soon as the papal smoke appears.

I could find zero documentation regarding SIRI AI being unsupported on an external device. But that's my best and only guess for why I was unable to get it to work for literally months.

Hi All,
Some observations about the new OS, running on a MacMini M4.
It took approximately 24 hours from applying to receiving the SIRI AI Beta.
Before being on the SIRI AI Beta, VO Shift L gave the same image results as on MAC OS 26, after SIRI AI the results are highly detailed and useful.
I cannot see any way in System Utilities /SIRI Settings to alter the keyboard commands to summon SIRI AI.
The Keyboard command for spotlight works well to summon SIRI and ask a question.
To access a previous thread, or ask follow up questions, I ALT TAB to the SIRI App.
The SIRI App is quite usable, once I got my head around a couple of nuances. I suggest it is a similar experience to using the Gemini App on the Mac.
Sometimes VO Focus will jump and read the SIRI AI response to my query, other times I will need to manually navigate to the answer.
As I have a Mac Mini with no microphone, I cannot talk to SIRI, and no responses are spoken by SIRI.
World knowledge and up to date information on current affairs seems surprisingly good. I say surprising, as all of the focus was on the deep system integration not the general world knowledge. Responses on par with other AIs I use.
I have not experience the Safari Not Responding bug in this release. For context, however, I had not really experienced it since upgrading to the Mac Mini M4 running MAC OS 26.
Overall, I have not noticed any general bugs and my experience with the OS has been very positive.

no, i am not running migration assistent because i am new to mac. recently i bought mac book air m5 and i set it up for the first time.
in this update, the message is coming several times after reopening mac.
i am quitting it with command q, but that message is popping again and again. so annoying.

Yesterday I got Preview to crash multiple times after attempting to scan a document with OCR. Before crashing it wasn't finishing the scan process after the scanner was done, requiring me to press the Cancel button, after which any attempt to read the OCR content of the scanned PDF would cause a crash. These crashes were reported to Apple through the crash report form.

I keep hering about this, but I have no idea how to do it. Is it just VO-shift-l? That seems to do a passable job of providing text, of course it's a page at a time, but still.

Open Preview, press escape to close the open file dialog, go to the File menu, and look for an option called Import From Scanner Name, where Scanner Name is the name of your scanner (in my case it's my Brother DCP L2550 printer). Clicking on that option opens a window with a preview of the scanned page and a few options to customize scanning such as whether you want to scan from the flatbed or document feeder, depending on whether your scanner has either, the resolution, the image type, the paper orientation, whether you want a one-side or two-sided scan if you choose document feeder, the image format (must be PDF), whether you wish to collate all the scanned pages into a single document, and finally whether you wish the PDF to include OCR information along with the scanned image.
